Character Name: Cornelius Hickey
Age: 30
Canon: The Terror; tldr it's a historical horror/drama show about the real-life Franklin expedition, which set out to complete the Northwest Passage in the mid-1800s, but the two ships vanished and their crews were never heard from again. In the show, the ships are trapped in pack ice, and Hickey and his crewmates fight for survival against both the elements and a supernatural force upset by their presence. Hickey himself is actually an imposter! His true initials are E.C. and he became part of the crew by murdering the real Cornelius Hickey in port and taking his place. He grows to distrust the captains of the expedition and ultimately he stages a mutiny; he's the show's primary antagonist (other than, y'know, Nature).
Canon Point: Toward the end of episode 9, after Hickey's group has fully broken off from the rest of the crew and after Tozier tells Hickey about the Tuunbaq consuming Mr. Collins' soul.

IC

Questionnaire: Please answer these questions IC; characters are free to lie but please indicate in meta if they are. There's no minimum word count, just write how your character would respond naturally.

1.) Congratulations! You're the winner of a "Get Anything Coupon". What are you redeeming it for? Assume this isn't a scam, or at least entirely one.
I'd scrub my record clean, start new. Move forward. Bugger England, too. I'd be off someplace warm, with plenty of fresh food and cigarettes.

2.) Yikes, you wake up to the smell of smoke and fire. What do you do?
Climb out the nearest window. What else is there to do but save your skin?

3.) If you could work any job in the world, what would it be? Why?
I wouldn't be a damned caulker's mate, I can tell you that. Suppose I'd make a living as a smuggler. I've had enough of bloody ships for one lifetime, but I wouldn't need to travel to call the shots now, would I?

4.) You screwed up and now everything's terrible. What did you do?
Terrible for you, perhaps. You lack imagination. Mistakes only create new opportunities.

5.) You have one month to set a personal goal of your choosing, with no outside pressures or worries. What do you plan to accomplish? Do you succeed?
A whole month? A man can accomplish quite a lot, given a month. If I was back on Terror, I'd wager I could stage a proper mutiny then. Dispatch Crozier for good. The man planned to abandon us, anyway.

6.) You're to be trapped on a deserted island for the rest of your life, and you can only eat one type of meal. What is it?
Quite the question to ask a man who's already in such a situation, isn't it? I've had enough of salted meats and spoiled tins. If I had my pick... a fresh pie would do nicely.

7.) You can go to the destination of your dreams, but you must face your greatest fear to get there. Do you go for it?
Isn't that what I've done already? It's no easy feat, being all but chased out of the only life you've ever known. But a year's nothing. A year on the polar sea, and then I'd start fresh on the Sandwich Islands, drying out in the sun. Instead, all I've got for it is three years freezing to death in a wasteland.

8.) You've been invited to an important party and asked to make a toast. What do you say?
Who's invited me? A toast is a quick method of getting on a man's good side. Spend a minute or two telling him what he wants to hear, and that's all I'd need. Best not to overstay your welcome.

9.) There's a locked door that you must go through, but you don't have the key. What do you do?
Well, someone's got the key. Just a matter of finding out who and how to pinch it off him.

10.) You've moved into a new place. What's one thing you add or do to make it yours?
I could do with a proper bed, and maybe a bloke to break it in with.

Skills:
  • Adaptability: Perhaps Hickey's greatest strength is his ability to adapt to any situation and find some way to gain an advantage. He's a masterful opportunist and a quick thinker. So, y'know, pray for me as I try to execute this in real time :');;;;;;

  • Deception/Manipulation: Hickey's a good liar, but more than that, he's good at spinning truths to fit his narrative. He's charismatic enough to get away with ridiculous lies (like he's pretending to be Irish but makes absolutely zero effort to hide his natural non-Irish accent and everyone just?? is cool with it???) and can hone in on others' weak points to exploit them.

  • Leadership: Hickey's charisma and ability to read others actually make him a pretty good leader! Specifically, he knows how to lead almost indirectly - he manages to push the idea of mutiny on his fellow sailors, but is actually not the first person to float the idea. Instead, he pokes and prods until others make the decision he wants them to make, giving the illusion that he's a team player.

  • Stealth: Hickey is pretty good at moving discreetly, especially when it comes to sleight of hand. He's got those misdirection skills down.

  • Murder: Hickey murders at least four people in canon and the implication is that he's quite comfortable doing so. He's fast, efficient, and brutal. It's a means to an end for him.

Measurements: Hickey is 5'8" / 177cm and weighs ~140 lbs. His hands and feet are average relative to his size.

Odds & Ends:

Victim/Killer Preference: I'm open to both, but story-wise he'd make a better murderer.

Anything else: I'm harping on about how much Hickey sucks but his primary motivator is that he's desperate and selfish. He's had a rough run in life, and unfortunately he's turned to crime and violence to try and crawl out of bad situations. He's not evil for evil's sake, so I'm hype to try him out in a setting that will actually be more comfortable for him than his canon, LOL.
